After 30+ years, we still get a kick out of Japan.

 

So, so much green tea plus serious amounts of beer, sake and great food as well as beautiful people and lots of laughter make buying trips a joy. We deal directly with the makers, dropping by their kilns to check out their new glazes and designs and generally catching up to see what’s new. Much of the time we are dealing with the sons of the fathers first dealt with 30 years back, so there’s a lot to catch up on.

We deal with lots of kilns, mainly from Central Japan, as this is where the clay is found and our warehouse in Japan is in the thick of it. The tableware we source is seldom seen outside of this area and is often only used in restaurants and homes in the areas around the makers’ kilns.

Relationships matter in Japanese business. Family matters. Relationships take time – infuriating amounts of it sometimes – but once they have decided they want to deal with you, Bob’s your uncle. Or in this case it could be Hiro-san…

It’s not about the bucks, it’s about whether it feels right.
