The lacquer-ware myth is a 1,600 year old story. While on the battlefield one day Yamato Mikoto , a member of the Imperial family, happened to break off a branch of a tree. Beautiful transparent sap began to flow from the branch. The prince ordered his retainers to collect the sap and when applied to his favourite utensils, they began to glow with a hard & sublime radiance. Today Shikki (漆器) meaning "lacquerware" is both a thriving craft form and industry that produces a stunning range of products for homes and restaurants.
